Expanded Polystyrene Used to Insulate Above Ground Planters

EPS and Styrofoam insulation panels are not just used to insulate buildings. They are also used to insulate above ground planters in colder climates. For this high-rise office complex in Arlington, VA, the landscape architect designed multiple, large, above ground planters throughout the plaza area. To extend the growing season for the plants, all of the planters were insulated on the sides and bottom.vAfter the planters were constructed, they were lined with expanded polystyrene insulation panels on the bottom and sides, next plumbing and electrical conduit was installed. Then a reinforced plastic moisture barrier was installed to help the soil maintain as much moisture as possible, next the planters were filled with dirt and top soil.

Finally the planting was completed.
