Part of the renovation of Kahului Airport on the island of Maui, included removal of a moving walkway. Once the walkway equipment was removed, the space needed to be filled and made level with the adjoining walking area. Since weight was a factor, the engineer selected EPS29 Geofoam for the void fill. The geofoam, weighing just 1.8 lbs per cubic foot, has a compressive strength of 10.9 pounds per square inch (1,570 pounds per square foot). Working with the general contractor, Universal Foam Products looked at shipping the material from a manufacturing facility in Kapolei on the island of Oahu or shipping from Long Beach, California and it was determined that for this particular project shipping from Long Beach provided the best delivered pricing for the contractor. Both flat and tapered precut pieces of geofoam was provided to make installation as fast as possible. The photos show the area towards the beginning of installation and with the geofoam installation complete, ready for concrete.
Universal Foam Products provides EPS Geofoam throughout the US and Canada as well as several other countries around the world. Where practical, we will have the geofoam manufactured in the same country where the project is located.
