The Facades Above Entrances to the Caldecott Tunnel in California

The façades above both entrances to the Caldecott Tunnel in northern California were constructed using EPS46 Geofoam form liners to create the intricate design. Because the EPS46 Geofoam has a high compression strength the contractor was able to pour up to 9’ of the façade at a time. Large EPS panels were constructed in the factory using sophisticated hot wire computerized cutting equipment. They were then hard coated so the concrete would have a smooth finish. The medallions were designed by local high school competition and were fabricated by a local company
