Type XV (60 psi) EPS blocks and sheets were specified for this rooftop project in Brooklyn, NY. The EPS blocks and sheets ranging from 2” thick to 12” thick were ideal for this application when compared to other fill materials such as soil, sand or stone because they are lightweight (just 3 lbs per cubic foot), incredibly strong, and very clean to work with. The EPS blocks were off-loaded at the street level and hoisted to the roof by crane. Pavers were installed directly on the EPS blocks and the lower layer of blocks were spaced creating chases for electrical conduit.
EPS is also used for green roof construction, particularly where there are substantial elevation differences. Because the blocks are available in any thickness up to 48” they install much faster than extruded polystyrene that is typically available in 2” and 3” thick sheets. The compression strengths for both materials are the same – 25 psi, 40 psi and 60 psi. Universal Foam Products provide EPS and XPS from locations nationwide, making us local to almost everywhere.
