Light weight concrete benches are prefabricated in a factory using nominal one pound density expanded polystyrene blocks as void fill to make the benches as light as possible without sacrificing any strength or structural integrity. The concrete benches, each one unique, were fabricated in Hingham, MA 02043 for a Boston art project. With a cubic foot of concrete weighing 150 pounds and a cubic foot EPS weighing one pound it is easy to see why the blocks were used. With the EPS core the weight of the bench was reduced by approximately two thirds making it much easier to maneuver and transport, but still plenty strong enough to handle the activity a bench at a public venue is designed for.
