When this building was originally built back in the 1930’s these pits held scales used to weigh the mail. In order to repurpose the building for the next application the pits needed to be filled in. Since it is heavy industrial space, heavy floor loading needed to be considered. The architect chose to fill in the areas with EPS39 geofoam. The lightweight geofoam weighs just 2.4 pounds per cubic foot but has a compression strength of 15 psi @ 1% deformation so it can support over 2,000 pounds per cubic foot with little or no deflection. The contractor measured the spaces and order the blocks precut. With minor trimming required on site the blocks installed very quickly and a new 4” slab was installed.
EPS geofoam is ideal for interior applications like this for several reasons.
It is lightweight and easy to move around.
It installs quickly with no tamping required.
It is much cleaner to work with then stone, dirt or sand.
