Large blocks of EPS29 Geofoam were utilized in this highway project at Interstate 4 and Olde Grade Rd. in Lakeland, FL. EPS Geofoam is a versatile and lightweight material used in construction and civil engineering. Made from expanded polystyrene, it offers excellent compressive strength while being significantly lighter than traditional fill materials. EPS Geofoam is commonly employed to reduce vertical loads on underlying soils and structures, preventing settlement and potential damage. As seen in this project, the material installed in multiple layers, and to eliminate any vertical movement between layers, galvanized gripper plates were used.

Additionally, in some applications, a Geofoam membrane is used as a protective layer over the Geofoam. This geomembrane acts as a barrier in the event of an oil or gas spill, maintain the integrity of the Geofoam system and ensuring its effectiveness and longevity.
