This plaza restoration project in Brooklyn, NY required a thoughtful solution to raise the walkways to the existing plaza elevation while keeping structural loads to a minimum. To accomplish this, the team installed high-density EPS foam blocks rated at 60 PSI and 100 PSI as lightweight fill, then poured concrete over the top to achieve the desired height. These EPS blocks offered impressive compressive strengths while weighing roughly 3 pounds per cubic foot, and just about 1% the weight of traditional fill materials. This combination of strength and low weight made EPS foam an ideal choice, significantly easing the load on the existing structure and reducing stress on the underlying unstable soil.
